Museums and Historic Houses

We all need a little culture in our lives and in the South West you certainly aren’t lacking in choice. Take a look through our museum listings and you will get some idea of the extraordinary people and heritage that helps make us what we are today… at least that’s who I blame!

In Bristol you can’t nip out for a newspaper or a bottle of milk without coming in to contact, in one shape or form, with the genius of Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Not only does the Clifton Suspension Bridge look down across the city but the tall masts of the SS Great Britain are also utterly conspicuous. And here’s a small factual taster… did you know that the SS Great Britain was the largest ship of its kind and carried over 15,000 emigrants to Australia? How were we to know they were all cricketers, rugby union players, rugby league stars, swimmers, really bad soap actors…?

Bristol is also the home of Concorde and out at Filton you can visit the final resting place of this, the most celebrated of modern aircraft. Add in trips to the Georgian House Museum, the Industrial Museum, the City Museum and many, many more and that coveted place in the Mastermind chair could still be yours. "And your specialist subject is?"..."Oh I don’t mind John… you choose."

Of course Bath also has a stunning history and tradition and matches Bristol, or any other English city, exhibit for exhibit. The Jane Austen Centre will appeal to those who thought Colin Firth’s Darcy was the man to make them go weak at the knees (so pretty much women everywhere then!) while Sally Lunn’s House and Kitchen will provide a neat contrast to the luxurious decadence of The Guildhall Banqueting Room. The Assembly Rooms are stunning and include the adorable Museum of Costume, but as you might expect, it’s The Roman Baths Museum that wins top billing. A trip to the South West is unthinkable without a visit here.

All in all there is certainly enough to keep you entertained and the kids quiet for a many a happy afternoon. Enjoy!
